What is a death doula?

A death doula, also known as an end-of-life doula, provides compassionate support, guidance, and companionship to individuals nearing the end of life. Unlike medical professionals, death doulas focus on the emotional, spiritual, and practical needs, ensuring a dignified and peaceful transition. They complement the care provided by healthcare teams by addressing aspects of the dying process that medical professionals typically do not cover.

Death doulas assist with a myriad of things including (but not limited to) creating meaningful end-of-life plans, facilitating conversations with loved ones, and establishing comforting rituals. They advocate for the individual’s wishes, helping to maintain quality of life and providing crucial support for both the dying person and their family, making the experience more manageable and meaningful.

About Me

I am the founder of New Ancestor Doula Services, providing end-of-life services and committed to assisting in the birthing of new ancestors with compassion, empathy, and intention. My journey into deathwork began with the profound experience of my grandmother's illness and then her passing in 2005. I had to take the helm of planning her care leading up to her death, and through the funeral and beyond, in order to allow for my mother to properly grieve. My own mother died in 2011, and that experience turned my world upside down but taught me so much about the process and ritual of dying well. These events have deeply shaped my approach to end-of-life care.

A graduate of the Going With Grace End of Life Training program created by Alua Arthur, I have developed a practice that emphasizes dignity, compassion, and intentional presence at the end of life.
